Thai Airways International is selling discounted tickets to encourage customers to take part in historic test flights to and from Suvarnabhumi Airport on July 29.
THAI wants passengers to experience services at the new airport, said Vasing Kittikul, the companys vice president of commercial operations.
Suvarnabhumi Airport has been on the drawing board for decades and was officially due to open last year, but completion of the project has been repeatedly delayed by construction problems and claims of corruption in the procurement of equipment.
Despite the setbacks, the government announced in June that the airport, which will initially be able to handle 45 million passengers a year and potentially up to 120 million is scheduled to officially open on September 28.
As well as THAI, five other airlines which operate domestic services Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, Orient Thais One-Two-Go, Bangkok Airways and PB Air will participate in the first major Suvarnabhumi test later this month.
From today, THAI is selling seats on planes flying to and from Phuket and Chiang Mai for 1,999 baht one-way in economy class and 2,999 baht one-way in business class.
According to the companys website, flights to these destinations on the same day from Bangkoks Don Muang Airport cost almost twice as much.
The company said some of the proceeds from ticket sales on July 29 will be presented by Aiports of Thailand to His Majesty the King to mark the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne.
Passengers who travel on the test flights will also receive souvenir boarding passes.
